Our Supported Playgroup

Kfss Verge St

Our supported playgroup has for the last 8-9 years been based in South Kempsey at the South Kempsey Community House.

At the end of 2013 we moved the Playgroup to our Centres’ purpose built child friendly environment at our Red Shed facility. This move has seen our numbers increase threefold with many families at South Kempsey who didn’t attend the Playgroup now attending on a regular basis and those who did attend continuing to attend. Over this year2013/14 we have provided to 42 individuals with 46 children. Fifteen families identify as ATSI with 15 children also ATSI. Playgroup staff report that families are often referred to our other programs while on site.

Referrals were made to parenting groups, Triple P or BUGK and to our family workers who can meet and greet parents at the playgroup. Guest speakers over the year include; Morgan the Storyteller, Durri Medical Centre Dental, Kempsey TAFE, bulk buying of food workshop, Hearing Health and Financial/Budgeting from the Kempsey Neighbourhood Centre.

Playgroup made two excursions this year, one to Billabong park where Zoo staff provided our group with their very own personal showing of snow leopards, Shrek the giant crocodile and reptiles where children were allowed to pat the lizards and snakes. The second excursion was to Kempsey TAFE open harvest day. Parents and children were guided through the bush tucker gardens and learnt to identify species. A drumming workshop completed the day with both children and parents joining in and all reporting ‘a great fun day’.
